Miasmal unveils cover artwork

Metalnews Power of
Old-school Swedish death dealers MIASMAL have revealed the artwork for their self-titled full-length debut. The album will be released on CD by Dark Descent Records and given the vinyl treatment by Detest Records and Me Saco Un Ojo.

The CD version will contain eight brand new tracks as well as six bonus tunes taken from the band's sold-out demo recording and 7" EP. MIASMAL is currently wrapping things up in the studio and are planning for an April 2011 release. Stay tuned to for more details.

In other MIASMAL news, the band is currently gearing up for their first US tour, set to kick off this May. Appearances at Maryland Death Fest and Chaos In Tejas (which runs June 2nd - June 5th in Austin, TX) are already confirmed. More tour dates coming soon.

Darkthrone mastermind Fenriz recently named MIASMAL his 'Band Of The Week' on his official Myspace page. Check out the blog here.

"You can hear the influence of a band like Entombed or Dismember in the songs, but rather than a mere rehash of those bands' ideas, there is a slug of punk hustle and vibrant flavor swishing around in the creative cores of their brains that forces them to 'draw from' rather than just re-organize a few chords and copy the masters."

Tommy Giles premiers new video

Metalnews Power of
BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME front man to release solo debut 'Pulse' January 28/31 in Europe!

TOMMY ROGERS, lead vocalist, keyboardist and founding member of the award-winning North Carolina progressive rock band BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME (also BTBAM) will release a solo album titled Pulse on January 28/31 via Metal Blade Records. The versatile front man and multi-instrumentalist, who not only self-produced the record, but also arranged, composed and played all instruments on the recording, will use the pseudonym THOMAS GILES (his given middle name) as his moniker for the project. Today, Popmatters"Sleep Shake", the first music video from the album, which was also filmed and edited by ROGERS. Check out the Popmatters premiere of "Sleep Shake" now at this location.

Recorded with Jamie King at The Basement Studios in Winston-Salem, NC, THOMAS GILES Pulse is a challenging rock record designed so that the parts build up to a larger, cinematic-like structure where everything from production to arrangements to lyrics to album art is carefully crafted towards a unified purpose. Testing the limits of what he can do naturally with his voice, ROGERS' strikingly beautiful falsetto and dynamic range conjures tales of anxiety, collapse, end-times and strength against swelling, heart-lifting arrangements and pristine backdrops of ambient loops, digital burbles, analog hiss and woozy drones. Exploring combinations of the outré genres of both post-rock and glitch, the music's emotionally resonant yet textural sounds draw reference to artists such as NIN, Radiohead, Muse, The Verve, Beck and Spiritualized, balancing both rock and electronic impulses.

"Creating this album was a very unique experience for me," comments ROGERS. "I honestly never thought I would get a lot of this music recorded. This record was a way for me to step back, focus on simplified song structures and really build off of melodies. Even though I love fucking my throat up by screaming, it was very nice to sit back and chill out a bit. I named the record "Pulse" because it is a collection of thoughts and experiences I've had through the years. It's a very personal record and I hope the songs help people evaluate their lives and make the best of their time here. Find your pulse."

"Tommy Rogers is out to blow perceptions away, though, with his new solo album Pulse, issued under his given first and middle name of Thomas Giles. With echoes of Trent Reznor permeating every second of his music, Thomas Giles Rogers is making his presence felt now more than ever before" - POPMATTERS

"exciting (a) wide-ranging reinvention of traditional forms" - THE ONION

"Tommy Rogers virtually sings in tongues the most delicate and (sounds like) professionally trained tenor ever performed in this sort of context." - GROUND CONTROL

"a gorgeous vocal climb, absolutely flawless"PREFIX

Darkest Era - The making of...

Metalnews Power of
Northern Irish Celtic-themed metal band DARKEST ERA will release their full-length debut The Last Caress of Light on February 11/14 through Metal Blade Records in Europe. To promote the upcoming release, DARKEST ERA shot a clip about the making of The Last Caress of Light which got premiered exclusively via Click HERE to check out the 4-minute clip.

The Morrigan, the first single, and opening track from DARKEST ERA´s Metal Blade debut album, The Last Caress Of Light, is now available for streaming on the metal blog, DARKEST ERA´s Ade Mulgrew notes why the song was chosen to be the first song released from the album; "The Morrigan is the opening track to the album. It's an energetic song that grabs you by the scruff of the neck from the first crashing chord and is full of powerful drumming, Thin Lizzy-esque guitar harmonies and an infectious, epic fist in the air chorus! It sets the tone well for the rest of the album." The Morrigan is available for streaming now HERE.

The Last Caress Of Light was recorded at Foel Studios in Wales at the end of August 2010 with producer Chris Fielding. The result are eight tracks of dark, stormy, epic Celtic Metal with which mix the melancholy and atmosphere of Irish Folk with the epic might of heavy metal bands such as Warlord, Iron Maiden and Thin Lizzy. The album stands out from all else as a record of intense emotional power and honesty; holding the listener within a dark heavy metal storm and not letting go until the last chords have rung out.

Krum - Vocals
Ade Mulgrew - Guitar
Sarah Wieghell - Guitar
David Lindsay - Bass
Lisa Howe - Drums

The Last Caress Of Light will be available on February 15th via Metal Blade Records in North America, February 14th in the Europe and the UK and February 11th in the G/A/S territories.

Barn Burner returns to Mountain City Studios

Metalnews Power of
Montreal, QC natives, BARN BURNER, are getting ready to head to the studio to record their follow up to Bangers, their critically acclaimed Metal Blade Records debut. The band has been touring and working on new tunes for upwards of two years now, and are hungry to lay down the new tracks.

Vocalist/guitarist Kevin Keegan has offered up the following update: "We have been itching to get back into the studio and record what we have been working on for 2 years now. The new tunes are fiercer but still catchy enough to show to your dad. Excited to work with Adrian Popovich at Mountain City again and drink all of his shitty coffee. Basically, this new record will just give us more excuses to drink beer and play shows."

Have no doubts BARN BURNER will do just that – drink beer and play shows! Keep an eye out for tour dates later this year. Get a glimpse of what the band is like live in their video for Half Past Haggard HERE.

Here's what critics (and comedian Brian Posehn) had to say about their previous album, Bangers:

"Anyone listening to Barn Burner? I hear elements of Fu Manchu, C.O.C., Maiden and Thin Lizzy. Great hard rock with big hooks." comedian and actor, Brian Posehn

"the band is electrifying, and whether you are in the mood to headbang or not, they inject something into your bloodstream that renders you incapable of resisting the overpowering urge." Outburn Magazine

"This music is all about the swagger, and the foursome carries themselves like the 1976-77 Habs: they will own you, plain and simple, no matter how hung over they are from the night before." Decibel Magazine

"Up tempo stoner rock like a cross between The Atomic Bitchwax, Fu Manchu and The Fucking Champs - excellent musicianship" Terrorizer Magazine

"huge groovy riffs that would make Phil Lynott proud."

Malrun og Boil indgår ny bookingaftale

Metalnews Power of

Januar sammen med bl.a.

Boil’s andet album ”A New Decay” udkom i Europa i sommeren 2010, og har siden opnået flotte reviews i Europa, herunder f.eks.

April,
- Kansas City (Odense) 21. Maj
- Musikcafeen (Århus) 4. Juni

Samael unveils cover artwork

Metalnews Power of
Swiss legends SAMAEL have just revealed the cover artwork for their upcoming album „Lux Mundi“ which will be released April 29th.

“For the cover artwork of “Lux Mundi” I envisioned a series of rays starting or ending at the centre of the cover. I wasn’t even thinking about any kind of motives, just black on black using a matte and shining black to make the rays apparent. I spoke about that with Patrick (Pidoux) who did the artwork of “Solar Soul” and “Above” and he came out with that idea upon which we immediately all agree“, commented frontman Vorph. “I drew a very graphic version of an eye which represents sight, the first human sense able to capture light”, added Patrick Pidoux.

Here you can check out the first studio report:

“On a few occasions during the recording of “Lux Mundi” our friend Sergey Ulyanov (who did the “Black Hole” video) came to the studio with his camera. He later assembled and edited what he shot and put some of the new songs as background music. That would eventually become a 3 episodes teaser for the new album”, reports Vorph.

Watch extensive Turisas interview

Metalnews Power of
Watch the 1st and 2nd episode of an extensive interview about the upcoming album “Stand Up And Fight” from TURISAS and check out what Mathias Nygard (vocals) and Olli Vänskä (violin) have to say:

The interview was filmed at the Dechenhoehle in Iserlohn.

The biggest, boldest and most gloriously extravagant album of the band’s career, “Stand Up And Fight” erupts like the ultimate heavy metal musical, with many layers of orchestration and choral harmonies adding to these songs’ intense sense of drama and mischief. Although remaining true to the spirit of past TURISAS records, the new album, which was mixed by Jens Bogren (Opeth/Katatonia) at Fascination Street in Sweden, takes the Finns to a whole new level of depth and bravado, as their unmistakable sound expands before our very ears, consistently conjuring up vivid images of the Vikings’ ongoing adventures.

“Stand Up And Fight” will be available on the following dates:
Finland/Japan: February 23rd, 2011
Germany/Austria/Switzerland: February 25th, 2011
Europe/UK: February 28th, 2011

Revocation begins work on new album

Metalnews Power of
REVOCATION are currently recording their new as-yet-untitled full-length album at Damage Studios in Southbridge, Massachusetts with engineer Pete Rutcho. The follow-up to the band’s break-through Relapse debut Existence Is Futile is expected to see its release in summer 2011. REVOCATION (David Davidson: guitar / vocals, Anthony Buda: bass / vocals, Phil Dubois: drums, Dan Gargiulo: guitar / vocals) began the tracking process after their fall tour with DESPISED ICON and MISERY INDEX.

David Davidson recently checked in from Damage Studios with the following: “We are currently wrapping up the recording process for our 3rd studio album and we firmly believe that this is our strongest material to date. The songs on the new release are incredibly varied and all have the own character. They range from technical thrash to groove laden death metal, there's even a song with a full horn section this time around. We can't wait for people to check it out!”

Additionally, REVOCATION has recorded a cover of DEATH’s classic “Pull the Plug” track for Decibel Magazine’s monthly Flexi Series. REVOCATION’s take on “Pull the Plug” will be included in the March 2011 issue of Decibel, on sale in early February, and is streaming online at this location

Davidson commented on the DEATH track; “We are extremely honored to be a part of the Decibel tribute to Death. Anyone who knows us is well aware that we're huge Death fans and we're very pleased with the way the song came out. R.I.P. Chuck.”

"Revocation leads the Death-Thrash into the 21st century!"

“Goddamn! So this is how it feels to be tide in front of a racecar with your eyes wide open!”

“Resistance is futile!”

“Killer record!”

“Revocation are the best band you've never heard! Absolutely godlike death/thrash."

Circle of Bards' debut album out 21 February

Metalnews Power of
Circle Of Bards is a band created  in 2008 as a development of an idea of one man: a vocalist and a composer – Mariusz Migalka. Originally conceived as a side activity, focused on recording a fully acoustic album, comprised of celtic ballads inspired by the world of fantasy.
After first successes proving that Circle Of Bards is quite a unique entity and great response from both folk and progressive background the band recorded full album after signing to Electrum Production. The debut album entitled "Tales" will be available in Europe via Twilight Distribution 21st February 2011, comes in quality digipack and consists of 11 songs:
01. Welcome
02. My Magic Song

Tales” is an album to be played when you need relaxation and high quality calm music. Sounds sipping from the speakers are somehow therapeutic” –

Presenting: Apostate

Metalnews Power of
Veteran Ukrainian doom/death act APOSTATE released Trapped in a Sleep late last year on Black Art Records and listeners lucky enough to have experienced it are still thawing out and paying contractors for the repairs to their damaged souls. A collection of dynamically composed songs that combine doom's crushing despair with death's frightening aggression in a way that continually captivates, Trapped in a Sleep is a work that is strangely beautiful, darkly majestic, and impossibly heavy.

"Apostate has always been one of the best representatives of Ukrainian doom metal music. The album is a must-have." - Dmitriy "Tiamat" (Ukrainian gothic/doom band IDOL)

"We've got something really new for Ukraine within doom/death, which sounds modern but at the same time like the older European doom metal of the nineties."  - Just Doom Zine

"It's like something new that you can listen together with the records of the nineties and you won't even notice the difference. Stylish and powerful record with high-quality sound that may stay in record libraries for a long time."  - Rock Lviv Zine (8/10)

"The sound on Trapped in a Sleep is certainly comparable to the British sound, although less strong gothic influences like My Dying Bride. For fans of old Anathema and Paradise Lost. The music sounds wonderful...deserves to be heard."  - Zware Metalen (88/100)

To Cast A Shadow - Track-by-track

Metalnews Power of
Marcus Granlien, guitarist of Norway’s TO CAST A SHADOW, commented on songs of upcoming sophomore album ‘In Memory Of’, due on February 14, 2011 in U.K. (February 18 in the rest of Europe) via Kolony Records:

Tormented: This is a very different song, and a new side of TCAS. So we thought it might be fun to surprise a few people out there and start the new album with this (in a TCAS sense) extreme song. It started out with a couple of riffs that gave Kent the opportunity to really experiment on the drums, and there is even a blastbeat at 3:40. Not very typical TCAS stuff!  We invited Hans Kristian Nørgaard to do some male vocals on this song, and he came up with a couple of lines that  really lifted the song to another level, and it matched Gunnhild 's dark and hypnotizing voice. All in all a good song to illustrate some of the changes and progress we 've had these last years. The intro to this song was created by Rikard Lofgren at Leonmusic, Sweden.

Morose: Kent surprised us all when he came up with this weird and creepy tune, based on a true story. It has a smooth, progressive rhythm that almost feels off-beat, and it matches the strange story told in the lyrics. Gunnhild returned to the studio to record another version of this song, and it resulted in a lot more presence. The tom-tom drums were fine-tuned and somewhat highlighted in the verses of this song, and the resounding attack of the birch drum shells is well displayed here. We recorded the guitars with a Fender strat, although a Gibson Explorer is used on some lead parts. At 2:05 you can hear me play my 20 year old beat-up, worn out acoustic guitar. In a strange way it has aged well, even though it belongs in a scrapheap. Gunnhild's amazing operatic voice at 2:57 is worth noticing.

Nightfall: Nightfall is one of those songs that just oozes of that classic TCAS sound. Some of these riffs came to life during one of the bands many jam sessions, and the whole song is based on the opening riff.  At 0:22, co-producer, Kristian Sigland came up with some tapped harmonics for the verse, that almost sounds like a harp if you listen closely. It sounded so good that we simply let him play it himself. On most parts of the album Stian uses a MarkBass amp along with a distortion pedal from EBS, and it sounds really dirty and gritty on this song. The guitar solo is the exact same solo that I’ve played the very first time the band jammed on this riff. It had the right sound immediately, and a very bluesy feel, so there was no point in changing it. During this solo you can hear Kent playing the drums along with the leadguitar in a way that defies description. The drums and the guitars just seem to match and fill each other out perfectly.

Oceans apart: A very dark and romantic song, that is played on a hot-rodded baritone guitar to get that deep and wonderful low sound. Even though TCAS has always played doom metal, this song introduces a new chapter in the bands history, when I growl throughout the refrain at 1:36, making it almost sound like some old-school Paradise Lost stuff. Being one of the heaviest songs on the album, it is surprising to hear how the ending turns into something completely different. Once again, we got HK Nørgaard to add the final howl at 4:07 to release the full aggression that lies within this tune. Kent’s Yamaha Recording Custom set gets some serious beating on this one.

Betula: A very short, special little song, for someone special...?  We had the honor of working with Nell from Theatre of Tragedy on this one, and she really gave her heart and soul. All the additional background voices were created by Nell at the spot while recording.  It fades in with a synth-guitar effect from a Boss GT-8 board, and you might recognise it from the first album, where the same effect was used on "A suicidal mind".  My beat up acoustic guitar is still hanging in there...

My Misery: Even though these pounding grooves and catchy guitar parts might sound like classic TCAS stuff, the arrangement and the vocals lift this song into a new and dark dimension for the band. Filled with emotions, frustration and anger it simply stands out as one of the most intense songs on the album. We re-arranged this song several times, and my growling became the lead vocals while Gunnhild's somber voice lies beneath.  At 3:05 the intensity and aggression disappears, and the song transforms into a depressive state.  When the bass enters along with the rhythm guitar at 3:23, they are both dropped all the way down to a low A-tuning, just to make your speakers rumble a little bit more.

When you leave the room: This heartfelt and personal song is actually Stian's debut as a songwriter and singer for TCAS, and what a fantastic debut! It starts off with Gunnhild's amazing operatic voice and  continues with some really heavy, classic doom metal chords. All male vocals are performed by Stian himself, and like most of the other songs it's based on a true story. As opposed to some of the other songs, Stian displays a more introverted song writing style in terms of the actual vocal lines for Gunnhild, and this broadens the quality and versatility of the entire album. And when Gunnhild added a personal touch to the vocal lines, the circle was complete. At 2:03 you can hear another guitar synth pad from my GT-8 board. The first 15 seconds of the guitar solo was created by co-producer and The Crest guitarist Kristian Sigland, due to the fact that I wanted a different approach on this solo. Although performed by me alone, hardcore fans of "The Crest" might recognise Siglands unique approach to guitar solo's.

Set afire: Once again Kent came up with a delicate and catchy tune with a groove that just keeps on going. Inspired by old-school black metal guitar riffs, I had to switch the JSX amp setting to the Extreme channel, to produce that angry evil sound that Kent wanted for this song. Although being a pretty straight forward metal-rock tune, Gunnhild’s superb voice creates a spine-tingling sensation that might cause goose bumps. Set afire reaches an intense highlight at 3:45, when Gunnhild empties her lungs and produces so much raw energy that the input level on her microphone went way beyond the maximum peaks, and you can actually hear the speakers cracking up. A very cool effect that we decided to keep!

The answer: "Time has forsaken me". A very honest, sore and fragile intro that introduces a Rhodes-piano for the first time in TCAS' history. Rickard Engborg helped out, and created some very cool keys, while Gunnhild and me perform a duet. Apart from the intro, this song is just raw energy, and Gunnhild really pushes her voice to the extreme to enhance that "live-sound" that this song was written for. This is the second song with the baritone guitar, and at 3:13 you can hear the guitars turning into a deep, dark and massive Black Sabbath-style riff.

In Memory of: Although this is not a typical title track, this beautiful, but tragic and heartfelt song managed to capture the essence of To Cast a Shadow. Gunnhilds performance is simply stunning and features so much presence and sincerity. In the final stage of the recording process, the band decided to add a guitar solo, and the one you can hear at 2:55 was written and recorded in 5 minutes, and it turned out to be perhaps the best solo on the album. Due to the fact that we had already started to disassemble the guitar gear, it was accidentally recorded with only 1 Shure microphone, instead of the standard 4 microphone set-up.

The CD was recorded at Hamar Recordings in Norway with producer Kristian Sigland (THE CREST, THEATRE OF TRAGEDY) and was mastered at Leon Music Studio in Sweden by Rikard Lofgren. The artwork was developed and realized by Matthew Vickerstaff of Darkwave Art (MY DYING BRIDE, CRADLE OF FILTH).

Dead Neon releases video for "Downwinder"

Metalnews Power of
Las Vegas-based nuclear doomists DEAD NEON have recently released a video for the track "Downwinder" off their self-titled debut album. The video, directed by Steven Horlock, can be viewed at this location.
Dead Neon is the primitive nuclear doom metal project of Las Vegas poet Jarrett Keene. Inspired by a morbid tour of the Nevada Test Site with only Goatlord's Distorted Birth and Leonard Cohen's The Future loaded on a half-broken iPod, the music of Dead Neon conjures a dreadful world ravaged by atomic conflict, where survivors inevitably succumb to radiation, starvation, each other. A writer by trade, Keene taught himself guitar in the months following his test site visit, shaping crude yet corrosive riffs designed to evoke the din of warheads and dirty suitcase bombs slamming into the Strip at twilight. In February of 2010, he conscripted friends from Vegas' mutually exclusive deathcore and indie-rock scenes-Jaq (bass) and Jessie (drums), respectively. The trio recorded directly into a Korg D888 in an abandoned warehouse behind a topless megaclub off Tropicana Avenue, resulting in a raw, full-length slab of blackened sludge-punk minimalism. Having earned a Ph.D. in English from a university in the metal-rich state of Florida, Keene composes lyrics that possess the depth of literary verse without sacrificing the dark sensibility inherent in aggressive music. Dead Neon's self-titled debut (released on 100 limited-edition cassettes by Vegas crust-punk/black metal label Ecophagy Records on September 15, 2010) contains a few surprises, like spoken-word intro "Advisory (Go to the Boneyard!)" and the album's final blown-out-dashboard-radio-at-earth's-end folk anthem "Ride the Light." But mostly Dead Neon just bashes you on the skull with a ferocity that has no rival. This is the perfect soundtrack for driving a post-apocalyptic desert highway overrun with mutants. insane thrill ride through the wastelands of an apocalyptic future. -
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome set to music and voiced by Cronos. -

The songs are Keene's morbid depiction of the goings-on in a dreary desert nothingness, evoking a landscape somewhere between the ones in Heavy Metal and Wall-E -- but with more mutants and carnage. -
