Nuclear Blast signs Avatarium

Metalnews Power of
AVATARIUM, the brand new band featuring legendary Swedish doom metal pioneer Leif Edling, have signed a worldwide record deal with Nuclear Blast.

AVATARIUM will release their first sonic sign of life on September 20, 2013 in the form of 12” mini LP »Moonhorse« featuring the titletrack, the B-side 'Boneflower' as well as an acoustic cover version of BLACK SABBATH's 'War Pigs'.

Besides Edling, AVATARIUM feature Marcus Jindell (EVERGREY) on guitar, Lars Sköld (TIAMAT) on drums, keyboardist Carl Westholm and singer extraordinaire Jennie-Ann Smith.

Commented Leif Edling: “AVATARIUM are so happy to sign with Nuclear Blast!

We would like to take our music out to the world and no-one does it better than NB.

AVATARIUM has only been around for about 8 months, so we are thrilled to begin the mix of our first album and bring our special dark/heavy/poetic metal music to the masses. We love what we do with AVATARIUM and it's an honour for us to join the Nuclear family!”

Commented Nuclear Blast A&R manager Jaap Wagemaker: “Nuclear Blast is very stoked to announce the return of Leif “the master of doom” Edling to the nuclear family! We already had the pleasure of working with Leif and CANDLEMASS in the past which was a great honour as we have been fans of his doom metal since he started making music with NEMESIS and we have followed him afterwards with all his other bands like CANDLEMASS , ABSTRAKT ALGEBRA and KRUX! We were all ears when he contacted us saying that he had founded a new band called AVATARIUM! As soon as we heard the music we fell in love with it, great melodies and riffs the way only Leif can write them and the angelic like vocals by Jennie! Leif did it again! We are very happy to welcome AVATARIUM to the Nuclear Family - we simply can't wait for you to listen to this amazing new band!“

Leif Edling: bass
Jennie-Ann Smith: vocals
Marcus Jidell: guitar
Lars Sköld: drums
Carl Westholm: keyboards

Jolly premiere new video clip

Metalnews Power of
This year so far, Jolly have not only released the stunning second part of ‘The Audio Guide To Happiness’, they’ve also toured Europe and the US with Polish progressive legends Riverside and released two music videos. Now the band are extremely pleased to reveal the moving new video for the beautiful track ‘As Heard On Tape’, which can be viewed here:

The band had this to say about the video: "When you're going through hell, keep going." -Winston Churchill

‘Sometimes the only way to deal with true pain is to just feel it head on. At the height of the Hurricane Sandy Disaster, David Roya, the father of JOLLY drummer/producer Louis Abramson, decided to walk to the beach for the sole purpose of letting his pain take him over. This was a particularly hard time for David, living for months in what seemed like a post-apocalyptic world, with no power, limited food, cloudy polluted air, and all the time in the world to think. Beyond the immediate trauma of the disaster, he now began to face his own mortality and feel the repressed pain of his entire life.

David walked to the beach, and spent about an hour crying, laughing, screaming, and just running through all the emotions that arose.

When he was finished, he felt a surge of relief, and energy. When he returned back home, JOLLY was over finishing up a day of filming the video for Dust Nation Bleak, and discussing ideas for further videos. David came bursting into the room and began to tell JOLLY all about his experience on the beach and how profound it was. He was oozing with excitement and elation.
After he left, bassist Anthony Rondinone turned to the rest of the band and said "this should be a music video.."

Soon after, Louis approached his father about the possibility of filming him while he went through this intense catharsis. He said at first it might be strange, but eventually he would be able to forget the camera was there. So off they went, father and son, to the dismal desolate beach, and there began a rather strange and beautiful experience. While trying to get artistic camera angles, Louis is simultaneously experiencing his father get completely overtaken by his emotions. This was a completely new experience for him, as his father had always proved to be a "tough" guy.

What may seem like a crazy man ranting on the beach is actually something quite beautiful, profound, and totally real. At the darkest time in a mans life, he was courageous enough to feel his emotions, and let the world see him in his most raw and vulnerable state. And you are witnessing this all through the eyes of his son.
JOLLY loves you.’

The band also recently announced two dates in the US with label-mates Spock’s Beard & Sound of Contact, as well as two shows with The Winery Dogs, details of which can be found below:

Metalnews Power of
The successor of »Moral & Wahnsinn« (2011) is announcing itself. DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER will return on May 30, 2014 with a new double album.

The inspiration for it was brought home by the band from all around the world. Trips through the Everglades, the snow-covered French Alps, the legendary Giant Mountains and a rehearsal room on a house boat.

“The more uncommon the place, the more appealing it appears to us”, front man Fuchs summarizes.

True Widow premiere new video clip

Metalnews Power of
True Widow’s turn-of-the-last-century, sepia-toned music video for “S:H:S” is available now on YouTube here

The Dallas-based trio released their Relapse Record’s debut, Circumambulation, last week.

The album, dubbed “hypnotic” by NPR and as “absolute perfection” by Ghettoblaster, is “musical noir” (Seattle Times) that “does a brilliant job of expressing the network of … dark emotions that make us human” (Exclaim). Alternative Press described Circumambulation as being “wrapped in spidery melody, reverb-haunted twang and plodding, almost processional rhythms.”

True Widow will join Chelsea Wolfe for a full tour in the US this September.

Circumambulation is streaming in its entirety via Bandcamp here and a free mp3 download of “Four Teeth” is available via Relapse’s website here.

Soulfly reveals album artwork

Metalnews Power of
Legendary Brazilian extreme metallers SOULFLY have revealed the cover art of the band's forthcoming studio effort, »Savages«, which is set for release on October 4, 2013 via Nuclear Blast Entertainment.

The artwork was created by renowned artist Paul Stottler, who is best known for SCARED REICH’s legendary »Surf Nicaragua« cover.

Furthermore, mainman and metal legend, Max Cavalera, commented on the album:

“Recording »Savages« was an amazing experience for me. I was so excited to work with Terry Date, whom I consider to be one of the best producers of all time. He has done some great records and we have been in contact for awhile since he mixed three SOULFLY albums in the past. He came to see SOULFLY whenever we played in Seattle, and we finally made it work that he would be the producer for »Savages«. My teammates were awesome. Marc did some crazy guitar noises and we did a 'Mars Part Two' at the end of 'El Comegente' - it's very LED ZEPPELIN influenced and Marc kicked some ass on it. I wrote 'El Comegente' with Tony Campos. It's in Portuguese and Spanish and it's about Vargas - a Venezuelan cannibal from the 80's. He is the Hannibal Lecter of the Andes. Crazy shit! I worked for the first time on a full album with my son, Zyon. Before recording the album I first worked closely at home with him in preproduction, and it was great to spend weeks on the songs with Zyon, shaping the sound of the record. Zyon did a great job and he hits really hard just like his uncle Iggor - it was amazing recording with my son. A whole record! A dream come true for a father whose life is dedicated to metal. »Savages« is a celebration of all that.”
Max Cavalera

Produced, engineered and mixed by renowned sound guru Terry Date (PANTERA, DEFTONES, WHITE ZOMBIE), »Savages« will be released as a limited edition digpack CD, 2LP vinyl and digital download.

Guest vocal appearances on »Savages« include bass player Tony Campos, Max Cavalera's son Igor Cavalera (LODY KONG), CLUTCH's Neil Fallon, NAPALM DEATH's Mitch Harris and Jamie Hanks of I DECLARE WAR fame.

Read, what all guest vocalists share:

"I was super pumped when I got the call to add vocals to 'Bloodshed'. It's badass that Nuclear Blast chose it as the first single.“

Igor Cavalera (LODY KONG)

"It was pretty incredible working with heavy metal legends like Max and all of SOULFLY."
Jamie Hanks (I DECLARE WAR)

“I am stoked to have been asked by Max to participate on the 'Ayatollah Of Rock 'N' Rolla' track! Max brought CLUTCH out on some of our earliest and most formative tours and this brought back some very fond memories of singing with Max all those years ago.“
Neil Fallon (CLUTCH)

„It was an honor for me to finally collaborate on a song with Max and co. It's something we've been talking about for the last 9 years. I've always felt like part of the Cavalera extended family, and for me it was a truly uplifting, comforting and memorable experience after say 26 years or so. We ran through all the takes together, trying to capture the carnal energy, the push and pull between force and action. Friction, charisma, and something true directing the sole intent of the message, that was my general angle on it. Art and expression are about capturing the moment, the essence of a connection between like-minded souls, expanding on concise ideas that start small and end up big.“
Mitch Harris (NAPALM DEATH)

“Getting to share vocals with Max on "El Comegente" was great. The song was coming along so quick, I pretty much wrote lyrics for that on the spot. I showed Max a couple of different things and used the stuff he thought was cool and made him laugh.“
Tony Campos (SOULFLY)

»Savages« tracklist:

01. Bloodshed (feat. Igor Cavalera)

02. Cannibal Holocaust

03. Fallen (feat. Jamie Hanks)

Nightwish recording Wacken show

Metalnews Power of
After having been decorated with triple platinum status in Finland as well as with gold statuses in numerous European countries (Germany, Switzerland, Poland, among others) for their latest studio masterpiece »Imaginaerum«, after the release of their very own highly successful fantasy motion picture »Imaginaerum by Nightwish« and after having been on tour all around the globe in the course of the `Imaginaerum World Tour´, legendary Finnish symphonic metallers NIGHTWISH are approaching the end of a cycle now, as the last three live shows in support of »Imaginaerum« are closing in.

And what would be a better way to celebrate the grand finale than to capture the entire upcoming show at Wacken Open Air – the world’s biggest heavy metal festival – for a live DVD/Blu-ray?

Mastermind and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen states:
“The time has come soon to wrap up the magical & memorable one-and-a-half year `Imaginaerum World Tour´ 2012-2013! We still have three shows left, one of them being at the legendary Wacken Open Air Metal Festival on the 3rd of August. Guitarist and founding member Robin Staps comments: "This clip is blending performance footage with excerpts from Craig Murray's 'Pelagial' movie, which was released along with the limited edition CD and vinyl boxset versions of the album. We've never really done a clip like that before, but it was great fun making this."

Pelagial, the latest album from THE OCEAN, has been received with open arms and ears across the globe – this is a band that is becoming widely regarded as leaders within their genre. Metal Sucks declared that THE OCEAN have "never written more intriguing music" in their 5/5 review. Spin recognised the band's diversity with "Mastodon-shaped footprints, lush strings… [before] the submarine crashes at Melvins tempos". Decibel noted a band who have "become more luxurious, experimental and textural", Terrorizer heard an album "ambitious and adventurous", whilst Kerrang were bowled over by "melodrama, intimacy, grandeur, grace and big fucking riffs." Rock-A-Rolla, bastions of taste at the experimental end of heavy music, emphasised how revered The Ocean currently are: "With Isis gone, no one has yet taken their place as intelligent and sensitive masters of post-metal but, with this, there's no doubt that The Ocean are shoe-ins for the title."

The latter's emphasis is fitting considering THE OCEAN recently toured a number of sell out shows with another master of post-metal, Cult of Luna. The Mastodon reference is relevant after they invited THE OCEAN out for their summer tour dates, and the diversity on display is never more apparent when you consider tours in the past few years with Dillinger Escape Plan, Opeth and Anathema. THE OCEAN has an army of fans, and undoubtedly the respect of their peers.

Diverse elements are honed and perfected on Pelagial, and this ethos is at the heart of the touring package for THE OCEAN's headline European tour. For an album that treads a wild and creative path within and outside of the supposed boundaries of metal, Norway's SHINING could not be a more appropriate addition to the touring bill. Their new album One One One was recently released and it's direct and pulsating approach is gathering the same kind of response that saw 2010's Blackjazz get rave reviews all over the world, with contemporaries such as Danko Jones and Mike Portnoy writing pieces praising the band. If you've seen them live then you'll know how good they are; if you've not, you need to! Poland's TIDES FROM NEBULA meanwhile have been mesmerising the underground and in 2013 they take a step up, releasing their new album via a brand new label. They bring post-rock to this package, a welcome ingredient due to this genre touching aspects of Pelagial. Finally, France's HACRIDE bring some serious, technical heaviness to the tour, as anyone who has heard their new album Back To Where You've Never Been will testify.

Martyr announces new bass player

Metalnews Power of
After the departure of former bass player Toine van der Linden - due to personal circumstances - MARTYR immediately set focus on finding a replacement and succeeded within two weeks when Jeffrey blew them away at his first audition for the band. MARTYR is pleased to say to have found the perfect man for the job.

But Jeffrey is not just a new bass player, he is a new member who fit the shoes of representing MARTYR on all levels. Bringing the power, strength and skills to the classic 80's MARTYR songs as well as the current and future MARTYR tunes, Jeffrey is taking the ambition to the next level.

An ambition that will be noticed after recording a new MARTYR album end 2013, early 2014 with an expected release later in 2014. Jeffrey's first live appearance will be on the famous Tattoo fest 2013 on August 24th in Nijverdal – Netherlands followed by more festival appearances over Europe.

"MARTYR would like to thank Toine for the wonderful years and everyone who took part in the auditions and helped us out!"

Cattle Decapitation premiere new video clip

Metalnews Power of
CATTLE DECAPITATION has launched a brand new video for Your Disposal from their most recent album, Monolith of Inhumanity. The band worked with Mitch Massie once again to create an irreverent, grotesque piece of video.

CATTLE DECAPITATION's Travis Ryan comments: "Director Mitch Massie has presented us all with a bizarre retelling of the story of Adam and Eve using themes from our latest album "Monolith of Inhumanity." Here we see Eve giving birth to humanity, a living, breathing piece of primordial meat birthed into the dirt making its way through the garden of eden, hellbent on destruction… A clean and conscious monolith foretelling what could be possible given the fact that humans exhibit superior traits of intelligence, instead the earth is flooded with technological fallout and debris by the hands of man. This video is very much a prequel to our other videos "Forced Gender Reassignment" and of course, "Kindgom of Tyrants"."
