MASSACRE RECORDS announces Ronnie James Dio tribute sampler

Metalnews Power of

Ronnie James Dio was a hero and inspiration to many musicians, such as Lars Ulrich (Metallica), Doro Pesch or Axel Rudi Pell, and rumor has it that he‘s the main reason why every metal head worldwide is familiar with the sign of the horns.

Now it‘s time for us to pay tribute to him as well: 12 of our bands covered Ronnie James Dio songs to honor this exceptional musician!

"A Light In The Black (A Tribute To Ronnie James Dio)" comes with 2 CDs with 20 songs by 12 different bands.

You can already listen to the first song off CD 1 - CRYSTAL BALL's cover version of DIO's "Sacred Heart" - here on our YouTube channel:

The stunning artwork was created by Jan Yrlund ( who is also a huge DIO fan himself:

"I decided to go for an old school type of hand-painted look, like the classic Dio covers, but I still wanted to keep it original. You'll find many hints and details that refer to well-known DIO themes:
The mountain has two peaks as if they were devil's horns, and of course the DIO mascot Murray is featured too, merging from the fire."

Watch out for the complete tracklisting that we'll reveal soon!

The 2-CD tribute album "A Light In The Black (A Tribute To Ronnie James Dio)" will be released on May 22, 2015 via Massacre Records!

The band plays powerful classic heavy metal with melodic vocals, but with a modern approach and sound.

Band statement:
"Headless Crown is proud to have signed with the legendary label Massacre Records, and to be part of it's long history. We're looking forward to do some good work together and bring HC to the metal crowds of the world!"

HEADLESS CROWN's debut "Time For Revolution" is expected to be released later this year via Massacre Records!

Debauchery lays claim to album title used by folk metallers Cruachan

Metalnews Power of
In a slightly unusual fashion, German death metal band Debauchery has put an end to the Irish folk metal band Cruachan's use of the words 'Blood God' in Germany. Not very metal, one must say.

This is a statement from Cruachan's facebook page:

Hi, Just to give you all an update on some legal crap that has been happening with the title of our latest album. Just before the end of last year our record label received an email from Thomas Gurrath from the German Death Metal band Debauchery. He told them (and showed them) that he has copyright for the 2 words “Blood God” in the territory of Germany. He threatened our label and told them he will sue them for releasing our album which is called “Blood for the Blood God”. (Cruachan never heard of Debauchery before any of this). He demanded all products be taken off shelves and nothing be sold with the words Blood God on it. Our label tried to reason with him because this is completely ridiculous, petty and childish. Cruachan and Debauchery are two completely different bands and the name Blood God is relevant to Irish mythology and history as that is how some people refer to Crom Cruach. We really see no reason why he had this mission to stop our albums being sold. He did not care what our label had to say. We have never seen anything like this happen in the metal scene, you would expect it from much bigger bands. We fail to see how Cruachan using the name “Blood God” will affect anything Debauchery do or affect their sales or whatever. So, as a result, our label have come to an agreement where we can sell off the existing Cruachan merchandise but can produce no more to sell in Germany. (We plan to use the title “Blood for Crom Cruach” going forward for Germany only). He has also received a financial compensation as well. From now on we cannot make any more merchandise that has “Blood God” written on it. Cruachan have kept out of all of this and allowed the record label try and fix this issue. As they and Debauchery have reached an agreement we feel it was time to tell our fans what Thomas Gurrath has done to us. Our record label can no longer sell merchandise in Germany with the word “Blood God”, we can still sell outside Germany with the original title but Trollzorn are a German label, this is a real disaster for them. Thank you Thomas Gurrath for doing this to us for no real reason! What has happened to artistic integrity? Or empathy with bands trying to survive in this current musical situation, there should be solidarity between bands – not this disgraceful behaviour!

WEEDEATER have already reissued their previous four full-lengths '...and Justice for Y'all' (2001), 'Sixteen Tons' (2002), 'God Luck and Good Speed' (2007), and 'Jason... The Dragon' (2011). All albums can be ordered in various formats via the Season of Mist shop.
Those infamous sludge outlaws WEEDEATER finally return with their long-awaited fifth full-length 'Goliathan'. Their new album marks the crossroads where true Southern rock and metal meet raw humour, old religion, as well as weed and whiskey. 'Goliathan' embodies the band's trademark shuffle and swagger at their fullest. Syrupy slow riffs are buoyed by canyon-deep bass and some of the hardest-hitting drumming since Keith Moon. Full-on bruisers such as "Cain Enabler", "Claw of the Sloth", and the aptly-named "Bully" demonstrate that 'Goliathan' is delivering a vintage WEEDEATER and the soon-to-be gold standard of Southern sludge metal. At its founding, the band rose like a doobie phoenix out of the ashes of BUZZOV•EN. When the cult sludge act called it a day, bass player Dave "Dixie" Collins teamed up with guitarist Dave "Shep" Shepherd and founded WEEDEATER in the harbor town of Wilmington about the year 1998. Their crushing and massive first full-length ‘…and Justice for Y’all’ (2001) created an immediate buzz, while critics were struggling to put a tag on their sound. Nearly everybody agreed that stoner rock, doom, sludge and some crusty elements were part of the mix, which the band simply calls "weed metal". The debut was produced by renowned engineer Billy Anderson (EYEHATEGOD, NEUROSIS) as well as sophomore album ‘Sixteen Tons’ (2002). WEEDEATER went out to perform live with CORROSION OF CONFORMITY and ALABAMA THUNDERPUSSY among others. After some detours of Dixie Dave, who played shortly with BONGZILLA and SOURVEIN, third album ‘God Luck and Good Speed’ hit the world in 2007 and shifted the band’s focus slightly towards the stoner side. The latest full-length ‘Jason… the Dragon’ got delayed when guitarist Shep lost a toe due to an incident with his favourite shotgun. When the sludge driven album finally came out in 2011, shows in the US and Europe cemented the band's reputation as a fierce live entity. After signing to Season of Mist, WEEDEATER reissued their full back-catalogue on their new label. Yet the Bible Belt state of North Carolina, USA remains a fertile ground for hemp and stoner rock. 'Goliathan' makes the South smoke again. Lean back and let this monster record blow your mind!

The Ugly Bio:
THE UGLY was formed in late 2004 in Stockholm, Sweden by Ingemar Gustafson (vocals) and Johan Eriksson (guitars), for the purpose of creating furious and relentless black metal with roots in the bands that put Sweden on the world map in the 1990's. They were soon joined by Peter Jonsson (bass) and drummer Henrik Östensson. In 2006 Per Rinaldo was recruited as an additional guitar player, and as the song writing progressed the band's sound evolved and turned into a truly offensive form of black metal.
In May 2008, they entered the legendary Necromorbus Studio in Stockholm to begin the recording of their debut album, Slaves to the Decay.

Slaves to the Decay was released on the 14:th of November 2008 and was highly acclaimed across Europe, including marking a score of 9/10 in Germany's Rock Hard Magazine. The following years were characterized by several lineup changes, and eventually THE UGLY was strengthened by bassist Joakim Antman (Decadence, Overtorture) and drummer Fredrik Widigs (Marduk) and all effort could be focused on writing the sophomore album which would become Decreation – a blasphemous effort with themes revolving around the destruction of the universe, cosmicism and Lucifer. It was recorded in 2014 with mixing being handled by Devo (Marduk) at Endarker Studios, leading the band straight to signing a record deal with ViciSolum Productions in early 2015.

Regarding the new album mastermind Niklas Kvarforth commented: "SHINING, the ninth, has been given the name of 'IX - Everyone, Everything, Everywhere, Ends'. For once I am extremely pleased with how this album turned out. I believe that the fevered presence of filth and uncompromising darkness is more prominent than ever before.  Not only will our more recent fan-base 'enjoy' the oppression contained therein, but I am also certain that those who stopped listening to SHINING after our fifth album will find the new one plague-ridden with what some might have felt was lacking on the more recent efforts… that atmosphere of old."
SHINING have previously launched a new website:

SHINING is more than just a band. In fact each release, every concert and interview becomes a bloody battleground, on which Niklas Kvarforth struggles with his inner demons. The frontman and only remaining original member has never been shy to let the world know about his mental afflictions, which seem to complement or even spark his outstanding talent as a composer and musician. His ninth album, 'IX - Everyone, Everything, Everywhere, Ends' is another excellent example of Niklas' genius. Reaching back to their black metal roots, SHINING simultaneously melt eclectic influences from progressive rock, jazz, even pop and more into deeply emotional laments from the dark side of the soul. Niklas’ vocals come in an even greater variety of expressions which few would suspect in a singer coming from the extreme metal scene. Moments of pain and confusion turn into insane outbursts of anger. Despair shifts into melancholy and an eerie sense of timeless beauty permeates all. Lacking any tolerance for false tuning, technical flaws and lack of ambition, Niklas has literally beaten any weakness out of his band, which demonstrates its remarkable prowess far beyond any average on this record. Founded in 1996 by Kvarforth, SHINING self-released 'Submit to Self-Destruction' in 1998 and spawned the term "suicidal black metal" with this debut 7". A couple years after first full-length 'I - Within Deep Dark Chambers' (2000) and sophomore album 'II - Livets Ändhållplats' (2001) had cut deep marks into the underground scene, Niklas replaced his whole crew and started a continuous cycle of changing his line-up. With MAYHEM drummer Hellhammer on board, 'III - Angst' (2003) and 'IV - The Eerie Cold' (2005) began to gather major metal press attention. SHINING then focused on bringing their vision and often controversially received live performances to Europe. Yet Kvarforth's mental health led to cancelled tours, physical and psychological fights within the band, and finally a break-up. Not content to let things rest after the breakdown, the restless singer returned with new members and the massively successful album 'V – Halmstad' (2007). SHINING had reached headliner status and toured with big acts such as SATYRICON and MAYHEM. Several line-up changes later, the Swede once again entered studio and recorded two albums in one session. 'VI – Klagopsalmer' was released in 2009 and two years later 'VII - Född Förlorare' darkened the light of day. The band also received their first gold disc for the single 'Förtvivlan, Min Arvedel' in Sweden. After rotating more musicians in and out, SHINING returned with ‘Redefining Darkness’ (2012) and a less aggressive, yet more sinister sound. Before signing to Season of Mist, the band released the project '8 ½ – Feberdrömmar I Vaket Tillstånd', which featured six of Kvarforth's favourite vocalists. In August 2014, SHINING entered Andy LaRocque's Sonic Train Studios to record their ninth album. 'IX - Everyone, Everything, Everywhere, Ends' is the sum of Niklas Kvarforth's musical evolution and experience so far. And while nobody expects the Swede to deliver a record to booze and sing along to, the charged word "art" enters the mind unbidden. This masterpiece should interest lovers of music far beyond the narrow confines of extreme metal. Plug your headphones in and find out for yourself!

THE GREAT DISCORD premiere new song on Close-Up Magazine website

Metalnews Power of
Debut album "Duende" out this June on Metal Blade Records!

Sweden has been a fertile ground for metal of all varieties for multiple decades, and there appears to be no sign that this will change anytime soon. The variety and quality of bands is staggering, and Metal Blade Records is prepared to help add THE GREAT DISCORD to the list of one of Sweden's finest new groups. The band's cornerstone is with the enigmatic vocals of Fia Kempe. Her tone and delivery is immensely emotive and is augmented by a band whose sound is impossible to describe. It's technical, heavy, and yet not so much to overwhelm those not anointed in metal. What's important is that THE GREAT DISCORD offers a truly unique twist on both metal, and what is to be expected from a female-fronted band.

Until now only one other full song from THE GREAT DISCORD has been made available. Today another selection entitled "L'homme Mauves" is available for streaming. Check out the exclusive premiere of the song courtesy of Close-Up magazine HERE!

The uniqueness THE GREAT DISCORD encapsulates is put on display in a series of video teasers from "Duende". Part 2, "Sacrosanct (Deus Ex Homine)" can be viewed HERE. The first video teaser entitled "Sanguine" which features a brief sample of new music with eerie yet perfectly entwined visuals. Check it out HERE.

Duende will be available worldwide on Metal Blade Records on June 2nd in North America, June 1st in the UK / Europe, and May 29th in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Listen to the first single "Eigengrau" and pre-order your copy of Duende now at Sample THE GREAT DISCORD's striking visuals, which will be a big part of their live show, on their official YouTube channel HERE.

The relationship between Fia Kempe and drummer Aksel Holmgren has stood for many years, connecting on a deep personal level when it comes to music, though it was only when they came together to form THE GREAT DISCORD in 2013 that their collaboration began. Sharing an interest in progressive music, they count the likes of Genesis and King Crimson as well as contemporary acts such as Meshuggah and The Dillinger Escape Plan among those who have inspired them.

While music pundits and critics will fall over themselves trying to label the unique and intriguing sounds contained within Duende the band are more interested in presenting their music to the world, with the hope of making a profound musical connection with the likeminded. Having been working toward the completion of the record for nearly two years the band have perhaps only just arrived at the beginning, and the ambitiousness of their music is further reflected in their goals. "We obviously want to take over the world," Kempe smiles. "We really believe in our vision, we really believe in the concept behind everything that we do. We want to entertain people. We want them to come to our shows and experience everything that we have visualized for this band, and we want them to relate to the emotion that we're putting into our songs, to be able to find something in THE GREAT DISCORD that they cannot find anywhere else."

Fia Kempe - vocals
Aksel Holmgren - drums

Tom Martin's Statement

So yesterday we put up an announcement in the form of a song, in which I declared I was quitting Lich King, and... April Fools! It was the truth.

These are my reasons for leaving. My reasons are my own, and don’t at all reflect on the attitudes or opinions of the other guys.

Reason #1: Live shows were never my thing. I have bad hearing so at a metal show when you hear the music, almost all I hear is deafening jangled noise.

Reason #2: Bars are the worst. On tour, you’re hanging around in a venue for seven to eight hours every night, and usually it’s a bar. I have no idea how someone sits in a bar for that long and doesn’t want to open their wrist with a blender.

Reason #3: I’m a homebody. I like sitting at home, surrounded by my comfort zone, making stuff. This isn’t to say I didn’t enjoy touring with Lich King, because largely, I did. I love those guys and discovered I love traveling... but I stopped having a good time when we pulled into the venue every night. I’d dread shows, and during them I’d sit on the bus and fantasize about being home with my stuff.

Reason #4: [redacted]

Reason #5: This is the big one: Money. There’s not much. Thrash bands have day jobs, and I’m not just talking about the small guys. I’d be willing to bet that just about everyone outside of the big four aren’t living off their music alone. In the song, when I mentioned “now a good show means some pizza and 9 bucks,” I wasn’t exaggerating. $9 and food are what I get for devoting my evening to what is considered a good show by our standards.

Some people tell me to be happy to have even that, because most bands don’t, and to suck it up and be professional about it. All I can say is that those people must enjoy the gig more than I do, and good for them, I’m glad... but “professional” is a poor choice of words for metal bands. If you’re in a band but it’s not your primary source of income, it’s not your profession, it’s your hobby... and your hobby shouldn’t eat up two months of your life when you could be hammering at your profession.

Lich King is a hobby that got away from me and started lumbering under its own will, demanding more and more of my time for minimal rewards outside of seeing people enjoy what we made. That’s fine, I’m going to let that beast stomp off and maybe in the future there’ll be lucrative tours or big shows I can jump onto. Maybe it’ll all be worthwhile in the future. Till then, I’m going back to just doing art and giving Lich King the amount of time a hobby deserves.

When Ol Drake left EVILE, he said “I've reached a point where I want... a house, a steady and definite income and everything in between, and in regard to my personal preferences, a touring band's income and uncertainties, in the state that I feel they would continue to be in, has become incompatible with how I feel and what I want/need.” That's pretty much it.

So... thanks to anyone that ever came out to a show, bought some merch and said they had a good time, because you helped me when I needed it.

If you liked I QUIT, you can get it here:

As for now, I solemnly pronounce thrash metal dead.

Your pal
